A Brewer's Brewery: Crafting Triple Crossing's Legacy

Refining Tradition, One Brew at a Time

"A Brewers Brewery”... it’s a phrase we’ve heard others use to describe what we’re about. While we’re flattered, it really does provide a bit of perspective on what we are, and what we do here in Richmond, where we’re known by some as a home for serious beer.

From what we brew, to the way we purposefully brew them, there is an intention rooted firmly in current and historic classic styles, and their modern technical execution. We’ve been talking, internally as how to best relay that to beer drinkers, what something as corporate sounding as a “brand identity” might be for us. We don’t and have never necessarily had the “angle” you might normally see others identify with. We aren’t an outdoors, lifestyle, dog owning, music themed, etc based anything. Maybe, early on, it was pure naivety about the beer industry in general. We first opened in the Richmond area, while firmly stating how bad of an idea this was, with zero industry experience. Initially, our approach may have seemed underdeveloped, especially since we started with a small, draft-only concept. However, this limitation allowed us to concentrate fully on what and how to brew.

Refinement Over Time: Czech Dark Lager

These days, for our first iteration of a new style or even a slight twist of what we already do, a group discussion gets us to a consensus based on the usual factors – aroma, flavor, color, bitterness, and how it should present on and in both the palate and glass. We then make decisions about what benchmarks we’d like to hit – ph at various points, mash rests temps and times, etc. Given our careful, and conservative nature about experimentation, the calculated risk of just going for it on even a 40bbl batch doesn’t scare us (much) these days. The reason for that being, we go deep within our chosen lanes of production, and rarely attempt the completely out of pocket ideas.

One of the exciting developments as we look ahead is the release of our Czech Dark Lager. We seek refinement in what we do, and that constant pursuit has pushed us toward more of a game of inches, rather than yards. When we dial in a beer, such as our Czech Dark, by way of things like decoction choices, hop loads, and especially roast, we’re left with isolating as few variables as possible and then rebrewing for the next round to see if we’re made happy. Then, should we get to a point where we feel like we nailed a beer to the wall and that’s it… slowly but surely, the self-examination we employ begins to get the better of us, and we look at that beer again to see if there's anything else we can or should be doing with it.

So yeah, a brewers brewery... we’ll take it.
